Cotton Quilting Backing proved to be the perfect fabric to make my boy a summer bathrobe. It was 2.8 m wide because presumably it can be used for a quilt for a double or queen sized bed. I found it hard to find cotton fabric appropriate for a teenager of 18 and fabric which was wider than 112cm. With the narrower fabric I would have had to get 4 metres and that made it quite expensive. But this was the perfect solution, plus I found it on the sale table. I pre-washed it and it was dream to iron and sew.

I chose to do french seams to make the inside look professional. But then when I went to put the side pockets in I realised the french seam wasn't going to allow it. I opted to sew rectangular pockets on the front left and right instead. You have to have somewhere to put your cell phone!

I lengthened the robe by 3 inches but then forgot to add this to the band when I cut it out (ie. the band around the neckline). I did have to go and get another 0.25 of a metre, because it was a long piece!

My son is six foot two tall so the seams were really long - it was quite a marathon sew! I image, not as much as a marathon as sewing up a hot air balloon! You guessed it, I ran out of cotton and had to make another trip to Spotlight! He loves it!

Any questions please just ask!

I have been sewing over the last three years but haven't posted. But, since I have joined Sarah Welch Gunn's 2018 RTW (Ready to Wear) Fast it's time to get back to making and blogging about what went right and what went wrong, and what fixes took place!

The rules for the fast are that I must make all my own clothes for all of 2018 and not buy any (except for underwear and socks and shoes!) I can however buy fabric!

I am not your average model - I have size 12 bust, size 10 waist and size 14 hips, the off the shelf ready to wear clothes rarely fit well. Stretch fabrics are very forgiving but still they can pull or gape in the wrong places.

What better way to start back into blogging than to talk about a favourite pattern. New Look 6184 has made up three summers dresses over the last three years.(all in cotton sateen). Cotton Sateen is my favourite fabric to sew and it always makes a comfortable summer dress. That little bit of stretch makes it so comfy.

The first dress was a white and blue dress style C and the second one was a red poppy dress using the straight skirt style D. The third dress was a green and blue one, also style D, but I put a beautiful flounce on the bottom which gave it a Spanish feel. (Youtube showed me how to get the measurements for the flounce.)

The feature I most like about this pattern is that there are tucks around the neckline which fit around the bust. When I cut out my patterns for sleeveless dresses I always put an extra inch at the shoulders and an extra inch on the side seems. I tend to leave the middle front seam and middle back seam as is. The I make it up with long stitches (for easy unpicking if need be) and put it on inside out. My husband pins it to fit. I resew it as per the pin lines and then try it on again. I do have a mannequin which I use in the same way - put it on the mannequin inside out and fit but from bust point to shoulder it is one inch too short and I am not bothered to spend time building up the shoulders.

Invisible zips are a dream. Once again "Youtube" is your friend and these are my zips of choice now.(You have to iron the curly up bit of the zip open flat and then you can sew oh so close to get a beautiful zipper closing.)

You can tell I am a piping fan! I used piping with chord (ready-made) on the red dress and satin ribbon for the blue and green dress. In my next blog I will show you the lacey facings I used (an idea adopted from looking at the inside of Anna Stretton dresses!)
We decorated the house in 1920s things and all our guest came dressed for the part.

So what to wear for me was the big question. I did lots of internet searching and decided I liked the look of this tango dress.

I liked the hemline and also the bit of fabric that falls from the shoulders so when you accelerate across the floor it trails behind you! So essentially I measured up a block for myself and went from there. It was not smooth sailing and it was more of an engineering project than a straight up sewing project! I added and subtracted bits as I went and sewed and unpicked and re-sewed and unpicked and so on and so forth! I made the bodice out of upholstery fabric (I have always loved jacquard fabric) and polyester satin for the handkerchief and I bought an organza shawl (scarf) with lace ends which I draped under the armpits. (Just a touch of upper arm camouflage) And you will all be proud of me for not choosing BLACK!

Here it is on model....
You can see it is shorter at the front and longer at the back. The neckline is very low and it the end to get the right silouette I decided to go 'bra-less" but had a tight lycra camisole on. My fabulous mother lent me her long strings of pearls and gave me her marcasite broach. Perfect!

Here's us all on the fabulous night! And the highlight for me was the champagne fountain (hired here in Christchurch from the China Cabinet -contact the lovely Maureen). If you have never had one of these then go for it. Everyone was thinking it was going to fall over but no it was marvellous and not much spillage. It's the middle of winter here so it was so nice to have a wonderful celebration in the middle of the dull days.

And I must mention that Megan my neighbour did my hair in true 1920s style. I think I should have been born in that era!

Spring is here at last and with it my garden turns into a wee piece of paradise.

The weather is still changeable with some days being summer-hot and some days being winter-cold.

I have been busy sewing but haven't got to share it so here are my last two months projects.

Firstly, this skirt which is made from cotton sateen (stretch) - beautiful to sew but you have to be careful not to stretch it too much when sewing it. I finished it with a black tape on the hem. Here's the pattern Simplicity 2766 and I made it shorter for summer. Love the way the 6-gore skirt falls.
DRESS NUMBER ONE

The grey dress which I made back in August out of very stretchy lacey textured fabric had the potential to go terribly wrong or beautifully right. I admit to having the material and the pattern NEWLOOK 6802 for many months before plucking up the courage to cut into this delicate piece of stash. It's always the fit that worries me and with different amounts of stretchiness comes the potential for disaster. Luckily for me I did lots of measuring and it fits like a glove.

I put in the sleeves and then took them out again. It looked a bit too baby doll for me (for a women of my vintage!) I like the tops of my arms covered now adays (I've seen some photos that made me think this!) so I will wear a touch of a shrug or short sleeved cardi with it.

I don't think you can get a good indication of fit with muslin/calico when you need to be using stretch - and some fabrics are like elastic and other just have a nice give in them like my favourite cotton sateen. If you have some ideas on this one, please share:).

How was I going to make it work? My trick was to use plain grey stretchknit (like thickish t-shirt) fabric underneath and then pull up the feature fabric a lot (2 inches!!!) at the front shoulder seams on both sides. I am very pleased with the result and the dress part falls elegantly. I do have to wear a slip underneath since it is quite see through.

Notice the swirling of the stripes in the top front and then the stripes fall vertically from under the bustline. (Selfies are quite hard to take - if you would like to see a better photo just say and I will arrange it. I did try to get the dress on my mannequuin tonight but I started wrestling with it and we were both nearly on the floor so I gave up and slipped gracefully into it to take this shot.

Last year's Christmas dress didn't get finished until February but this year I am onto it and have nearly completed it. I bought the red white and black cotton sateen as soon as this year's summer fabrics arrived at Fabric Vision.

After much pawing over the patterns on the internet I kept going back to Vogue8685. I saw a blog which was mad on Mad Men vintage fashion and it had the same bust fitting which was three pleats under each boob to give the shaping. Then when I found out the cost of vogue patterns there was more procrastination I've never sewn vogue before. Last summer I even drafted my own pattern and borrowed Burdastyle from the library, but in the end I decided this one was very nice and I had to have it.

The pattern was from a favourite top which I cut up to use the pattern but becasue this knitted fabric was more stretchy it ended up being a wrap around with a ribbon tie. I added lace trim on the edge. I did have to hand sew it on becasue the sewing machine kept missing the edge. I gathered around the bottom of the garment so it has a ballooning effect. It's very warm and quite elegant.
If I made it again I would cut the waist slightly lower. I didn't allow for the seam allowance so it sits just a little bit too high - not much but I would have liked the waist to be down an inch.

I got the knitted material at Sakaguchi's annual sale. I thought it would be hard to sew but it wasn't and it didn't unravel. It behaved itself admirably.

I found a good tip on making sure that the overlocking doesn't unravel. You leave a rats tail on the end of the stiching and then thread a needle and sew it in like you would when you put together an actual knitted garment.

If you wonder if I have disasters. Yes I do! I have a half assembled blouse. The fabric is so flimsy and hard to sew and it doesn't fit and it's not doing what it is supposed to. I think it is going on the scrapheap! Lesson learned. Just becasue you like the material, doesn't mean it will be easy to sew! Be fussy about what you choose. Getting ambitious is when I am often faced with disaster but then again, I'm not going to get good at sewing if I don't take a few risks now and again.
I can spend my whole lunch hour stroking divine fabrics - I suppose it is my equivalent of window shopping. I find the feel of beautiful fabrics therapaeutic - more so than even the colour or pattern. I feel rather wonderful after such an outing. I go alone so there is no discussion needed and the lovely people at Fabric Vision - well I guess they know it is all part of the joy and eventually I will buy something.

Remember this lovely image - it's actually a burda pattern for the cardi but I loved the lace skirt. So I had my eyes pealed and saw a similar fabric in Spotlight, and grabbed it. It is such a lovely piece of fabric that I was afraid to cut into it and so spent the month of July procrastinating and getting it out and putting it awayt!
But yesterday I decided to feel the fear and do it anyway!

Burda Easy 8155 - it's my third skirt in this pattern and they have all come out quite different!

Look - it's turned out just fine. I lined it with grey coloured synthetic fabric so that I was sewing a double layer. I didn't want the seams to show and the lace was slightly stretchyt and the lining was not! I also decided to do a wee embellishment on the waistband - a grey strip to break it up.

Mine rides up a bit more than hers! But love it standing up - I'm imagining myself at a wine and nibbles event where I will be standing and socialising. Just note that when I first put the lining in I made it perfectly meeting the bottom of the lace. But when I sast down the lace rode up more and you could see an inch of the lining. So I redid it so that the lining comes to about 1.5 inches above the hem.
Suggestions for the Front Closing

The only bit to finish is the front closing. Do I use hooks and eyes, buttons velcro or what? I've turned down one side at the front collar and put a brooch on to make it more modern and less Sherlock Holmes. My youngest son (13) said he didn't like the cape- but I was in slippers so I changed into boots and jeans and he then said, "Now that looks good!" and I agree. Let me have some suggestions on how I might close the front. Vote using the Poll on the right.
Then I will finish it and will take a photo of me in it so you can see how styley it is. I'm now thinking it will be good for Sunday walks in the Botanical Gardens and to wear to photography club where we sit in a big hall and I often wish I could wear a peggy square rug!

Destruction (Poor Instructions)

BurdaStyle magazine really is doing itself an injustice by having inadequate instructions. It has not been until I have actually made one of their patterns up that the problem is evident. There is a lot of clues on the internet though, but I thought, how bad could they really be! It's not like I always follow the instructions, but seriously what are they thinking or not thinking. It's not fair on the sewing community to assume we instinctively know what they mean. (Yes, I am a bit grumpy about this!)

Vent

Apparently the cape is meant to have a vent! This is me venting about the vent. What vent? in the back seam, in the side back seams? where? My cape does not have vents! Vents optional!

The Collar

You know those geometric puzzles - this cape has one of those in the three collar pieces ...and I'm normally good at those sorts of puzzles, but this was infuriating. In the end I made my own one piece collar (double sided) and put iron on interfacing on one side.

Incredible Hulk Shoulders

My shoulders are not the same as this pattern shape which are more incredible hulk than damzel on a bicycle (like the picture suggests), so I trimmed down the sides seam only which turned me into more of an urban batwomen shape.

The Lining

I ended up lining the cape - my fabulous mother says "You are going to line it aren't you!" so that helped with that piece of procrastination. But since I had changed the shape of the incredible hulk shoulders, it was quite hard to get the lining right but it has turned out fine. I pressed open seams on the slits for the hands seams and was able to sew the lining seam allowance for a nice finish. I overlocked the other seams which took out lots of bulk (rhymes with Hulk!)

UPDATE: I'm very pleased with my cape and wore it out shopping at Ballies (Ballantyne's Department Store). It's like Selfridge's and I always feel posh shopping there! The only disadvantage with the cape in this modern world is the need to wear a lap and diagonal seat belt in the car. You can hitch it up if you are a passenger but if you are driving then it is a bit tricky so fling it off into the back seat (if there are no kids there of course ) and put it on for your jaunty walk out or shopping escapade!
The boys are watching the Dark Knight on telly tonight and since it's Mother's Day my boys have made me feel like a super hero! My youngest son baked biscuits and made cucumber sandwiches and organised savouries all while the rest of us were at the hockey. I arrived home to High Tea all laid out nicely with my fabulous mother also joining us.
I cut out the cape Pattern 112 from Burda Style Magazine 08/2011 size 42. I gave a generous seam allowance of just under an inch (just in case). Piece 1 is actually the centre front and the facing section. Watch out for the straight grain lines: pieces 2 and 4 seem wonky but that's because they drape on an angle. I gave the hem a little bit extra (2 inches) so I can decide the length I prefer.

I will leave the cape on my model for a few days to see if the shoulders drop. Perhaps they are a different shape than mine so I might get hubby to pin it on me inside out to get a better falling line. My shoulders are squarer not so curved.

I have decided to line the cape even though the instructions aren't for a lined cape. (I'll work it out!) I imagine myself going out for brunch and flinging it over the back of a chair and it would be nice for some nice black shiney lining to show! And I am going to get some bobbincat labels made just to give it the professional touch. lol
With the loose weave fabric I would in future zigzag or overloack immediately because as you can see in the photo above they unravel easily. That got me thinking about button holes and how they could be tricky on this fabric. And then the sewing god spoke. She said go forth and look in Fabric Vision while the boys are warming up for an hour before their hockey game. How could I refuse? After about half an hour of dreaming up creations I nearly fell over a stand adorned in a sewn simplicity garment showing an example of how tape can be used over knit fabric as a firm base for the buttons and button holes. I whipped out my iphone and took the shot. There is a sewing god - the universe is talking to me. lol. My tape and buttons will be hidden but they will be better on this as opposed to relying on interfacing for stability.

I have been growing fond of wearing broaches lately so just out of curiosity I decided to browse ebay. There's some pretty uuuggggly looking broaches out there, but there is also some exquisite ones. I came across this wonderful keepsake. Some teenager in Ohio, USA earned this badge and as a dressmaker I am now going to proudly wear it. Isn't it cute! Can't wait til it arrives!

Talk about procrastinate! It was very difficult to choose but in the end I have chosen one pants pattern and one cape pattern. I did like the green cape in 08/2013 but my 15 year old son told me I would look like a homeless person in a blanket!! So I couldn't unthink that visual image and have gone for somethiing more contemporary looking.
As I metnioned I use vilene (non-iron on interfacing) since I got a bag of 5 metres for NZ $3.99 whereas 4 pieces of flimsy Burda tissue was NZ $15.99. I use a ballpoint pen to write on the vilene having carefully pinned the vilene in 4 places near the edge of the sheet to keep it secure.
Things to remember when tracing:

Label each piece with magazine number, pattern number, piece number out of total number of pieces and the name of the piece which you get off the instruction panel.

Mark the straight grain (tricky to find sometimes but look for the big arrowhead in the appropriate colour.)

Check for the instructions that apply to the piece you are cutting out like "fold line" and mark largely and clearly.

Remember the seams and hems aren't included!!

Pin the vilene pieces together for safe keeping - a single pin usually does it.

I have this cape material in my stash so will begin on this. I am a bit apprehensive about what size to cut for the pants which will take some thinking about.

The lights in my house are not good for sewing at night - silly halogens. I find they don't give good coverage and there are lots of dark spots. My fabulous mother bought me an angle poise standard lamp to help so I will get that out now that daylight saving is over.Catherine Smithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07747482962413709355noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-648545133651290672.post-64796822780550359432013-05-02T03:00:00.003-07:002013-05-03T04:01:39.839-07:00Burda Magazine Challenge - Sew A Long

Still Deciding...

It's the 2nd May and I can't decide what to make! lol I thought I would make some pants from cotton sateen or maybe drill, but quite a few people have had trouble with the way Burda pants fit. A toile might be the answer. Note to self....I'll go out and get some calico tomorrow.

I also want to make a top out of knit but now I am getting ambitious and too much of that leads to unpicking and disaster. My goal is for three garments over the month. I'll start one project on Saturday so I will have to decide by then.

Capes

Secretly I have always loved capes. My nana gave me one of those peggy square crotcheted ones with pom poms on the end of the ties. It was red and white and I felt like a story book character. I don't even have a photo of me in it. drat and Mum threw it out in one of our many moving houses episodes. There is something wonderfully romantic about the flow of a cape. I get images of knights and white horses in the woods and a maiden in her Burda cape. The question is whether I would wear it in public? I just went to Capes on Pinterest and find Nina Garcia has put up a board on Fall Trends - Capes. They are to die for.....go look....And I see one person in the sew-a-long has indeed chosen to make a cape.

And then I remembered this other cape that I owned and loved.

This is me with my brother Marty. Me in the cape and Marty in the coat that our fabulous mother made for us to wear to Sunday School. The cape was green and had lapels and it felt good to wear even as a 6 year old. I guess that settles it - a cape is now on the Burda agenda! Interestingly I got told off on numerous occasions for picking flowers in the Botanical Gardens on the way home from Sunday school. I should have been born somewhere where wild flowers grew on my pathway to church!

Certianly I do have a rather deliciously warm and ridiculous looking coat, my latest purchase - the walking sleeping bag - yes I got a Katmandu long puffer jacket in the sale. You can blame me for the balmy 21 degree heat on Monday the day after I bought it. But I am a hockey mum and my boys are now playing late afternoon and early evening games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. I won't be making it to all the games, I have another priority you know - sewing for myself!

Tracing Labrynth

I will use that cheap interfacing for tracing my patterns onto. This was some tights I tried but they are still a work in progress and the fabric makes me look like I have elephant legs! (No, you're not getting a photo!)

Close Encounter with a Librarian

The other thing is of course that I have been getting the mags out of the library and you only get them for two weeks before you get fined for having them overdue. I'm a great contributor to the local library in terms of fines. A few weeks ago after being out for a lovely Sunday walk, the librarian there wouldn't let me take out the Burda mags without my library card. She wouldn't even let me log in with my password to confirm my identify or check that my record would show that I have been getting Burda Mags out for quite a few months now. I went back the next day and the Burda's were all out to other borrowers! Such is life! lolCatherine Smithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07747482962413709355noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-648545133651290672.post-77490538362436225542013-04-28T23:23:00.002-07:002013-08-08T02:21:01.316-07:00Buy the exact fabric seen in BurdaStyle MagazineBy chance I came across a fabric shop in Germany that sells the fabrics as featured in BurdaStyle magazine. It's not very PC from a sustainability viewpoint - but for those who want to make the garment exactly like it appears on the glossy pages it's worth a look alfatex.de/modestoffe/burda-style/ (And there's a translation to English button when I used Chrome as the browser.) Very tempting! Not all are the original fabrics but they suggest replacement fabrics. The trouble for me is that it's winter here and I generally sew my winter garments in the winter and summer ones in the summer. Perhaps a little planning ahead will enhance my stash. For all those who are coming along for the Sew Along with Curious Kiwi, take a look!
Love that Lace Skirt

If anyone sees anything like this lace then please, please let me know where I can get it. I love the rows of different patterns and the adorable colour and haven't seen anything like it, but I love it. It's a Burda 03/2013 cardigan but seriously the skirt is amazingly gorgeous!

I get all the Burda Mags out of the local library and love them but like a lot of people have never actually made anything from them. That's the whole fab purpose of this challenge. I will choose carefully since the more ambitious I am the more unpicking and swearing and cursing that can go on. This is particularly true of fabric choice and I am finding stretch fabric to be a puckering challenge. I changed the settings on the overlocker, yep I read the instructions for knits and the change has helped. Shall I make a jacket, a coat, a dress or a skirt, shall I play it safe or shall I step up the challeng?. Shall I choose somethiing from my stash or buy something new? It's winter here so a jacket or coat is appealing. I saw some nice chocolate brown soft wool....

Yesterday I went to Sakaguchi's fabric sale. He's a fabulous designer and is located right here in my own city. At the end of each season he has a sell out of left over fabrics for more than reasonable prices and so I brought home a great stash - a bit much black but as Sakaguchi himself told me at the till, you can never go wrong with black! One great purchase was an embroidered silk! What do you think I should make with this gorgeous piece. I have 0.9 metres and it's wide.

I never used to have a stash - didn't appreciate there was a concept and didn't realise the pleasure and the treasure. As a teenager and a student and even as a young married person, I only ever had enough money to make one garment at a time so I only bought purposeful pieces with a pattern. But sewing bloggers out there you have made me realise that it's perfectly normal to be completely obsessive with buying fabrics - and now I buy guilt free especially at sale time. Besides, I learnt the hard way that the roll does not contain an infinite amount and once it's gone, it's gone. don't you hate going to the counter to get 2 metres when there is only 1.2 left on the roll. Check out this piece of blogging which had me in hysterics How to buy fabric. What a fantastic attitude this blogger has!

Roll on May and the great Burdastyle Magazine Challenge! I might even try and do a step by step blog for this challenge. Very excited.
LBD

That toile just keeps giving and giving.

I decided to go to an Awards dinner so the LBD was the obvious choice and since I had my trusty fitting toile I used that as the basis. I chose black stretch satin and chose a high neckline. i also bought some wide lace and then cut out the sleeve pattern. Then to dress it up I made a sash. I was going to wear my mothers marcisite broach on the knot but in the end I bought some flowers. One for the bow and one for the top of the zipper where it gaped. Embellishments are marvelous for covering up slight imperfections in the sewing. And of course of got some lovely new shoes!
Anyway I made another dress in the same style but fitted the back with two long darts. Again I used Cotton Sateen bought from Fabric Vision and again it was easy peasy to sew. And congratulate me, I didn't use black! Love this dress and since I already had the fitted toile, it was quick to make. I put in a V-neck this time and edged the neck with satin bias binding.

It's so comfy. I think its the slight stretch in the material that makes it so. I've been wearing it with a short sleeved red cardie to barbeques and out shopping.

I would have to admit to being a bit of an impatient sewer, simply because I want it finished so I can wear it. But when I get like that I have now trained myself to put it down and come back to it another day. Forcing myself to make a toile was soooo worthwhile, I recommend it.
I have finally had time to make my Christmas dress - just in time for my mother's birthday last week (February). I used the Burda 2943 as a foundation but I used my brand new dressmaker's dummy to make it fitted, rather than loose. I set up my dummy to my measurements and then realised that my nipples are closer together than my dummy so I changed the dials to narrow the chest and expand the sides and back. The one measurement I overlooked was shoulder to nipple which at my age is lower than my perky 'Flora'.

The material had a bit of a stretch in one direction but sewed like cotton and seemed like no trouble. I think it was cotton sateen. However, the front gapped once I put in the facing around the neck so
perhaps I stretched it a little when I sewed it even though I staystitched
it. To fix this I did a gather by using
a stretched piece of elastic at the centre front and it shaped it nicely.

It feels really lovely to wear.
I also like to water the garden in the morning before I get dressed so I needed something for that, just in case the neighbours look over:).

Choosing the material was the hardest bit. I spent hours going through the American Craft Cottons - I love them so much and chose an expensive one with gold cotton in it and sort of Japanese looking only to find when I got to the counter that there wasn't enough left on the bolt. Just my luck. In the end I went for a cheaper Voile from Sportlight which was only NZ$9 per metre. I did french seams to make it look tidy. I love the lemon ribbon sash for a belt and only put it on by chance when one of my Xmas present came wrapped with it. Next time I would make the gown a little longer. (I didn't show you my knees!) The pattern is one I bought on TradeMe (a whole box of 60 patterns for $5 and $18 for postage. lol). But worth it since patterns here can be between $10 and $20 each. Voila with my Voile! A garden gown for the garden!
I managed to get them made on 13th January. The fabric is from ThumpaCat in Arrowtown. (They sell on Trademe) R loves them! (especially since I made a crouch adjustment so they don't hang down too low!)
It was in a stretch knit fabric with a chiffon gathered trim. It was very cheap and as a consequence didn't last the season without terrible pilling which I couldn't remove. So I cut it up and used the pieces as a pattern. My trim didn't sit the same as the old garment so I edged it with satin bias binding and it looks fab. I sewed two buttons on the front but you could also clasp it with your favourite broach.

For a simply made skirt it was an unjustifiable cost, so the sewer in me told me to try Fabric Vision. Who would have believed it, that same fabric waved to me as I entered the shop. My material was $(NZ)20. It was when I got it home that I discovered it was one way stretch but I remembered before cutting it out to put the stretch across the skirt. Phew! I used Burda Easy 8155 .
I sewed a size 12 and thought the measurements were out on the packet but then remembered the sizing has ease added. (Apparently its about 2 inches on the bust, one inch on the waist and 2 inches on the hip.) But Gertie's New Blog for Better Sewing will reveal all. Thanks Gertie. I've ordered your book and I'll wrap it up for my Christmas present which is the best way to get the present you want!

Then I got confident and some lovely dotted fabric beckoned to me - even though it was more like carpet bag material I purchased it. Foolishly, I failed to consider the material and made up the exact same pattern in the exact same size as the previous effort. It fitted perfectly, except I couldn't sit down in it!!! lol
I was determined it would not be a failure (and hence a waste of money) so I went cruising the internet for ideas. On Sewing Pattern Review dot com (scroll down to Angela Wolf's video) on exposed zippers. This was the solution. I got a chunky zip and put it in the full length of the skirt. I also did a bias binding waist edge instead of a waistband. A lot of unpicking and resewing but it was worth it. The waist could have been taken in a bit if I had taken the time to try it on before beginning the waist hemming. Patience is a virtue as a sewer but when I am on the home straight I tend to rush so I can wear it.

I can sit down in it now and I've got a snazzier skirt than I would have had without the visible zip !! I used a jacket zipper so the skirt can be zipped completely off! lol
I am returning to home sewing after a 10 year drought and have decided to document the journey and share with others who might be in the same position.

Hardly anyone I know sews these days so for support I have been trawling the internet and have found a whole active global sewing community offering extremely helpful advice. Pattern Review.com is amazing. You can see how others have done with sewing commercial patterns and you can see how the pattern looks on different body types. Gertie's New Blog for Better Sewing has also provided great inspiration and free sewing lessons.

I have also discovered Colette patterns and I got a great little book out of the library by Simon Henry called The Little Black Dress which helps with drafting a pattern made to fit beautifully. I have decided to buy my own copy of this little book with its overview of sewing techniques and its explanation of using the block method.

The team at Fabric Vision has been fantastic. The materials have changed quite a lot in 10 years and I have a lot of catching up to do. For example; how to hem stretch knit fabric that is as slippery as an eel and how to use bias binding instead of facings.

When I was 11 years old my lovely mother gave me a basket of sewing items including some fantastically sharp singer sewing scissors which I still use today decades later. She also gave me a tape measure and pins, a quick unpick (which today is called a seam ripper and come to think of it I have been overly frustrated on several occasions and did actually rip the seam instead of the threads!) Patience is a virtue when it comes to sewing.

Anyway the basket of sewing items was just in time for me to start sewing class at 'Manual Training" and I made a skirt which I wore a lot since we didn't have school uniform. Then my mother bought me some more material and I made another skirt up at home to get more practice. From there I sewed all sorts of clothes from tops, to dresses to trousers and wore them all. I even made (actually it was more of a build) my own wedding dress out of taffeta. Thanks Mum for hand hemming the lace on the 5 metres of hem since I had run out of stem by then!

I have two boys, so in the early years I did lots of pyjamas, dressing gowns and dungarees as well as the full range of super hero costumes for them. They tend to be t-shirt kids so the sewing slowed down.

Anyway the sewing projects I am embarking on are for me. I have decided that I can make skirts for $20 rather than paying $180. Wish me luck.Catherine Smithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07747482962413709355noreply@blogger.com0
